LOON

to the stratosphere and beyond

As network and connectivity become more and more integral to our modern life, the expansion of internet access is slowing, leaving billions of people disconnected. Today, more than 3.8 billion people (half of humanity) don’t have network access. Loon seeks to fill the wide gap left by ground and satellite technology by creating a new layer of connectivity in the stratosphere. Loon accomplishes this using “Loon balloons” that travel on wind patterns in the stratosphere carrying network delivering cargo. This technology allows even the most remote regions (once thought of as impossible to serve) to have the ability to access internet connectivity. Loon came to Factor looking to redesign their website to improve the user experience, visual design, content all while also polishing the existing brand.

The homepage starts with the user in the dark starry backdrop of the earth’s stratosphere. As the user scrolls through the homepage, the background colour gradually changes and the stars fade away until the user reaches the end of the page where they are met with the Loon balloon launcher on the earths surface. This concept simulates the journey a Loon balloon takes after it comes down from the air.

Along with re-envisioning the information architecture, user flows and visual design, we updated their existing graphic style and created a set of brand new illustrations to use as key parts of Loon’s newly polished brand.
